Dental Sealants

Children are more prone to cavities.  Their mouths are smaller, making it more difficult to get a toothbrush behind teeth.  Their teeth have many grooves and crevices that collect food and plaque.  Plaque allows bacteria to grow and cavities to form.  Surprisingly (or maybe not), children sometimes resist brushing their teeth when they should.  All of these factors lead to a higher incidence of tooth decay (cavities).

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends dental sealants to help prevent cavities.  Dental sealants are applied in a safe and simple procedure.  A rubbery coating is applied to the teeth by Dr. Parmer with a small brush.  This coating seals down into the crevices in the teeth to help keep food out and plaque from forming.  Dental sealants are especially helpful on the back teeth where it is harder to get a toothbrush.

Studies have shown that dental sealants are effective up to 80% in the first two years and up to 50% at four years.  The sealants are regularly monitored after application and can be easily reapplied if cracked or damaged.

Most dental insurance companies will cover dental sealants in children up to the age of 18.  Call 940-663-5880 today to make an appointment to get dental sealants for your children.
