Periodontics
Gum disease is known as periodontal disease which is inflammation of the gums and bones around the teeth. The treatment of periodontal disease is called periodontics. Dr. Parmer is an expert in treating periodontal disease.
The two forms of periodontal disease are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the mildest form, and periodontitis is the severe form which can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.
Plaque and bacteria are directly linked to periodontal disease. Plaque is formed when bacteria gather together. When the body detects bacteria, it begins to fight it off with its immune system. When the bacteria and antibodies fighting the bacteria invade the soft tissues of the mouth for a prolonged period of time, pockets can form in the gums around the teeth. The pockets then collect food and attract more bacteria, prompting the body to release more antibodies, leading to more pockets forming in the gums.
When periodontitis is discovered in the mouth, treatment is needed immediately. Scaling, root planing, and antibiotics are the first stage of treatment for gingivitis. More advanced periodontitis may need to be treated with surgeries, such as pocket reduction or flap reduction, bone grafting, soft tissue grafting, tissue-stimulating proteins, or guided tissue regeneration.
Preventing periodontitis is preventable by keeping plaque from forming on the teeth with a good oral hygiene routine and professional cleanings every six months.
