TEETH WHITENING
Before you buy an over-the-counter whitening kit at the grocery store, call Parmer Dental to discuss your professional whitening options. Over-the-counter kits take considerably longer than professional whitening treatments and usually provide lackluster results. If you want noticeably whiter teeth, professional whitening can provide up to 10 shades lighter and give results in a much shorter time.
At-home kits can take weeks or even months to show any results, as they do not contain the strength of hydrogen peroxide needed for meaningful change. Professional whitening solution requires professional supervision to prevent damage to tooth enamel. Agents of this strength are not available over the counter to protect patients.
Some whitening toothpaste claims to contain hydrogen peroxide. While this may be true, the toothpaste cannot be left on the teeth long enough to do any effective whitening. If a toothpaste doesn’t claim to have hydrogen peroxide, it will only contain chemicals and polishing agents for scrubbing stains off the enamel. This could possibly achieve one shade lighter.
A single professional whitening session lasts only 30 to 60 minutes, although several visits may be required to achieve a large degree of whitening.
